A Cretaceous Christmas

Ok, when it comes to Christmas I begrudge spending top dollar on decorations that I will only have on display for less than one month of the year, Especially when I cant find EXACTLY what I want.
I tend to be fairly frugal any how, I think making things I one of the most important part of the festive feeling, but hey that could just be me…

So when it comes to decorating my mini Christmas tree (Poundland for a £1!) I wanted something extra special, If you didn’t already know I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Dinosaurs, and after seeing the monstrosity of a ceramic diplodocus tree decoration in PaperChase for the princely sum of £14, it got me thinking ‘I could do something much more tastefull for A LOT less…
So for this Cretaceous Craft you will require the following:
·
  •           A handful of the cheapest Plastic Dinosaur toys (mine are fairly small but this would work with any size)
  •          Paint, I used matt emulsion I had lying about in the basement (homebase’s ‘just one coat matt classic cream emulsion)
  •     Sandpaper
  •      Elastic: Colour and thickness is your choice but I used 1mm Red  ‘Elastic string’
  •      Jewellery Findings, I picked 20 of these up in TIGER for  £1, but I imagine you could find these in the jewellery section of any hobby/craft shop, shapes vary mae sure its thin enough to bend with fingers or pliers
  •        Length of thread.
  •       Your trusty Glue Gun, locked and loaded
  •      A can of clear coat (optional) mine will probably need the protection ,I used Plastikote’s Krystal Clear

2. Pick your lovely dinosaurs.

Here I have a nice range everything from a stegosaurus to some weird mutated kangaroo beast, rub them up the wrong way with some sand paper to give some bite for your paint, this prevents it from flaking off like my first one did…

2. Paint your Dinosaurs with your desired paint I’d recommend priming them with white if you are planning to use a lighter colour (I had to do about 5 coats to get an even coverage in white) It’s worth noting using a brush to do several thinner layers will allow more detail to show though (faces and scales) on smaller toys
3.Leave these to dry, and if you have decided to, give them a quick coat of clear coat to minimalize chipping, set aside

4.Next take the required amount of your chosen elastic
(I used about 3 inches) Make a loop and tie the ends in a big double thickness single knot. Pull tight, but knot too tight (I couldn't resist) you want it to be larger than the hole in your ‘finding’ but smaller than the finding itself.

5.Now for the tricky part, threading the loop through the ‘finding’
The elastic will fit but needs some help, so I enlisted the help of some thread, thread it through the hole, loop  though the elastic, thread it back through the hole again, grab both ends and firmly pull, your elastic should pop through with minimal fuss.

Before
After

Here you can see a before and after

6.Trim the knot ends

7.Now all it’s a case of hot gluing the loops to the dinosaurs
I folded my findings slightly to match the curves of the dinosaurs before applying glue to minimalize fuss and burnt fingers, It’s worth noting I actually folded the finding backwards in the case of the Stegosaur to fit it tidily between his plates

VOILA!

Feel free to add glitter, tie ribbon around the necks ect, if these were bigger I’d put santa hats on them. I guess this could be used with any toys (Pokemon, farmyard animals, fish ect ) the world is your metaphorical oyster!

Mini Boats

These are pleasant, i'm thinking, a few of these say in a little bowl of water on a window sill...  A modest craft consisting of only a cocktail stick, some paper ad a lolly pop stick cut into thirds...

Internet Spoils

I've been sat on the internet for hours, its cold and rainy outside and im looking for some inspiration... I found these blissful paintings by Mevrouw Walvis, she also makes some pretty darn radical plushies all for her son...

Thursday, 5 May 2011

Well, of late i have been up to lots, i say lots in the most generic of ways, i mean really even at rest our homeostatic processes still continue to maintain our metabolic rate constantly, and in reality i haven't achieved much more than that, but as a result of a distinct lack of work coming my end of the court i have had the opportunity to draw like a madman, with varying degrees of success... quite a few cartoons especially, and have definitely been influenced by my art based copains. In addition to this my latest 'GIMP stint' has also given me another tool to use at my disposal, which is always handy, especially when my comic book layout leaves a significant amount to be desired...
The first is inspired by my best friend Joe, who spends far to much time in the shower, allowing me (among others) to speculate what in blazes he actually gets up to in there...

The majority of my doodles and drawings has generally consisted of pages of Pokemon', because quite frankly they are a tad AWESOME, also i am seething that I am unable, due to both a lack of a DS (which I had to sell in order to feed myself at university) and money.
In short a FUCKING MASSIVE WASP has decided to cohabit alongside the rest of my family, making its filthy nest of looming death in my roof space, alongside artifacts from my youth including my TMNT figures, man I bloody hate wasps, yes they are a magnificent example of an obligate gregariate arthropod (bugs that die if they don't live in groups) but their swively heads beady 5 eyes and that menacing stare which the continue to maintain even after death causes the inner recesses of my mind to shudder uncontrollable, they make me cringe, so the thought of several hundred swarming above my head is little more than terrifying...

I've also been honing my cartooning somewhat, granted it still has a long way to go, but i cant help but notice that my drawing  ability has been bettered by my prolonged unemployment somewhat... these are some quick sketched of mainly my dog, but Joes puppy Clifford, had to make an appearance (as per usual)

Oh! one of the few things i have actually done is finally managed to sit down and watch My neighbour Totoro (finally) which although not much actually happens in the film is still somewhat enchanting in its nature (also i totally want that catbus) and has seen some appearances in my doodles...
 and around the house....
I wonder if those seeds will start growing now?

Morning :D

Got woken from my slumber by my mother this morning, i would of been a bit pissed, but as my eyes unglued themselves and my ears began to draw in the tones of the world, i focused onto a cup of tea and these....
Note: they are made by 'BJ Toys'
also... they are wicked awesome...

Valentines

The card I made in the end?

and it  read's 'You are my Treasure' -nothing says love like a ship load of pirates!
I used This Here Template from Robert Sabuda, had to fight with the glue for half hour, and made a few minor modifications (crows nest built the sails and masts separately)

Pigeons & Papercrafts

After lurking within the depths of the internet, i came across This gem of a site and as my family keep pigeons, and I got a new printer last week (so cheap it almost hurt) I thought I'd give it a whirl...

Here he is in all his glory...
And then I thought 'Now what the hell do I do with him?'
Solution: Put him in with the birds....
Man did they freak when they saw me coming at them with a block of paper! they were all over the shop, kids were crying, sirens were sounding, but after a while they settles down and got a few pics ...

I'm pretty chuffed, a completely pointless exercise, but it filled in an hour of my unemployed time, which is much more productive then staring at image boards all day, gradually degrading my corneas with the glare from my netbook...

Making Finger Puppets

Me make stuff? Never! this is all for my interview (which i totally failed at, but i thought i'd whack this up anyway, i figured someone in the world might think its remotely interesting, you never know...
I think the fox is fucking BADMAN personally, but hey, I just like orange, its not my most favourite pigment, but there are not enough ginger animals, actually maybe that's why farmers hate them... everyone beats on  gingers...

Also the mole looking thing... IT's A BLOODY SHREW GODAMMIT!
This is my preliminary sketches (its based on on food chains btw) God that snail is a happy fellow, look at him go!

The top ones made of felt, but as I couldn't get 10 year olds to sew him together within half hour (along side his mates) so to card i Went (I'm so totally going to make some real felt finger puppets soon methinks)
And a quick how to presentation board:D
I'm pretty chuffed with them, they are cute and quick to make :D definateley need to make some all felt ones mind

Busy Busy, Russell is Awesome, Busy

I've been busy, so ridiculously busy, i have a Mahoosive job interview on tues which I've been preparing for, its more than a little interesting to say  the least
''As part of the interview process, we ask each candidate to undertake the following tasks within
their 30-minute interview slot:
•to give a five-minute talk (presentation style and media of your choice) on the European
bison Bison bonasus, suitable for a Year 2 class.
•to demonstrate briefly an original craft activity related to woodland food chains. Bring
the design template, various design stages and the finished article. The activity must be
capable of being completed by a Year 4 child working independently within 30 minutes.''
I'm not being funny but that's the coolest interview I've ever seen! I have to talk about Bison (which are admittedly not the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of the most mega awesome animal in the world), hey! It'll have to do! I have plans:D big plans that have all been completed, (I'll whack em' up after its done so the internet wont put me at some form of disadvantage...
Also we get a free tour of the animal collection... sweet! but seriously, I'll be gutted if i don't get it, this job (even the interview is practically built for me, i better not cock it all up!

In other news I've been visiting the joy that is the job centre, a place that may as well have a sign on the entrance that says 'Dementors live here' Jesus Christ! I had to fight my way through the fog of depression  and fend off the stink of failure. But a guy called Russell totally made my day, with his sheer hatred for his operating system, shouting 'Bloody Shit Piece of Crap' and banging his monitor at random intervals, a feat that was made all the more hysterical owing to the fact he was in an open booth shared with 6 other staff and 20 of Camberleys finest citizens who could all hear his complaints, but still Russell didn't give a flying fuck, his discord was almost admirable, he had me in stitches, I didn't even care if i didn't get my 'failure payment'. This was comical Gold, Russell is a 40 something balding man, who had just returned from holidays and the sight of such a gentle old man cursing, bellowing and then hastily apologising 'excuse my french' or my favourite 'I'm really sorry but this is a piece of shit' hyphenated with the occasional 'for GODS SAKE' really made my day! Thank you ~Russell, you totally deserve a medal!

Crochet revisited

it took me an hour, and i'm dropping stitches all over the place, but I am improving, yes it is still my bain, but I am determined  I will conquer it, I will bathe in a bath composed entirely of crocheted wool  .... and to think I almost gave up and resorted to cross stitch... soon my scarf will materialise! soon!

Progress

Horrah i have single handedly made a poorly fitting eyepatch for stroke sufferers! behold my raw talent!

nk so it leaves a lot to be desired, the stitches aren't uniform, there are holes all over the place, BUT I have made rows which is a start...I hope
now I have to learn to be consistent and then there are a the double stitches and colour changes to contend with. But in a miss guided kind of way i feel oddly proud, its the labour of several hours of hard sweatshop labour, but there it is :D

I respect old women, and despise meat thieves

That's it, I've taken the plunge, i now am the proud owner  of a 4.5 cm crochet hook and a shit load of wool and all i can say is that i have a new found respect for old women crochet is frigg' hard!!
My haul cost me 2.59 with a free (!!!!) booklet thats meant to make me a pro, and although it tells me how to make certain 'stitches?' it fails to teach me what the stitches actually do... all i want to do is make a scarf or something!

I've been playing for about 3 hours now and my progress is...well minimal
i have a very shakey foundation chain, but I can cast on and make my chain on my own now... but if i try to single crochet... well this happens
That's right, an abortion! I'm taing a tea break and having a brief reflection on my dismal performance, and will hopefully, by the very least be able to string a couple of chains together by the end of the day, this is my mission.

Also sainsbury's have apparently had a spate of meat related thefts of late:

 weird...

SALT DOUGH!

I have no idea where the urge came from, but it surfaced with such excitement that nothing would quell my desire  to make some form of creation from the medium that is salt dough. Salt dough is a medium usually linked to poorly formed 'tot sculptures' which beg the question 'mate, seriously, what the hell is that?' a question which is instead twisted and reformed by professionals  into 'sooooo....tell me about your sculpture'. The child involved will then offer an exclamation so lucid that even an LSD seems dull in comparison, after which the child's mother involved would demand that it sits pride of place on the mantelpiece to advertise to any visitors that the child of the household has the artistic ability of a lemon. Bless
Basically i just wanted a play, and i broke Anna's room plaque that her niece made because it was shit I was drunk, so i totally owed her one. so as usual I over stocked on salt (i bought 5 times more than i actually needed)
and used this recipe

SALT DOUGH
1 cup of  table salt
1 cup of water
2 cups of flour

Throw the salt and flour in a bowl, then gradually add the water  untill it makes dough, of it's to sticky add flour and if its too dry add more water...
And I don't mean American cups either, I just mean A cup (obviously the bigger the cup the more you will make)

And this is what I made...

with the dinosaur being my favourite...OBVIOUSLY!
You can leave it to air dry (takes a day or two  or cook it on low heat, what i didnt realise is that it still takes a billion hours on low temp (50-100 Degrees C)  so i did it for an hour and then left it to air dry for the remainder of the time :D
